Director Anand L Rai is back with the sequel of 2011 super hit Tanu Weds Manu bringing together the unusual pairing of Kangana Ranaut nd R Madhvan to create magic yet again. While his last film Raanjhanaa gave Bollywood a talent like Dhanush to reckon with, AR Rahman’s music in the film was a huge hit. This time around Anand L Rai has opted to go with Krsna Solo who composed songs for Tanu Weds Manu, with Tanishk & Vayu supporting him as guest composers. So is the music of Tanu Weds Manu Returns any good? Lets find out.
Composers Tanishk & Vayu have revisited the old Punjabi folk wedding song, giving it a quirky twist. Sung with gusto by Brijesh Shandllya and Swati Sharma, the song has an energetic feel to it and reminds you a bit of Lehmber Hussainpuri’s Sadi Gali from its predecessor. This wedding song boasts some fun lyrics by Vayu, with a hint of techno tadka to traditional Punjabi beats. Overall, the song manages to impress the listener.
Move on
Fast paced numbers are generally not associated with heartbreaks. But composer Krsna Solo teaming up with lyricist Raj Sekhar comes up with a frentically paced break up number sung perfectly by Sunidhi Chauhan. Though it may not be a chartbuster, the song perfectly depicts pain of heart break in Sunidhi’s throaty rendition. Move On is a situational number which will pick up once the movie releases.
Mat Ja Re
Stuck in the rut of singing melancholic numbers, Ankit Tiwari gets to add one more song to his list in that genre. Mat Ja Re, a slow romantic number, that depicts the pain of separation is not very different from what we have heard in the past in Bollywood sad songs. But thankfully, Ankit Tiwari gives his all and manages to sound refreshing. Without the burden of scoring a number, Tiwari’s voice sounds more soulful.
Make way for the desi rustic fun number, which will capture your attention right from the start. Sung effortlessly by Jyoti Nooran, the song boasts a catchy tune by Krsna Solo which will make you wanna hit the dance floor right away. Spell binding rustic beats coupled with freshness in Jyoti Nooran’s voice makes this song a winner. The remix version of the song kills the rustic flavour, as the techno beats and synthesiser overpowers the fun element of the song. In short, the remix version stands out like a sore thumb and was unnecessary.
Old School Girl
Now this one comes off as a big surprise. Never did I expect to find a jazz number with English lyrics in a film as desi as Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Unlike Amit Trivedi, who strived for scoring classy jazz numbers in Bombay Velvet, Old School girl composed by Krsna Solo and sung by Anmoll Malik is care free and super fun. The lyrics by Raj Shekar are funny and the way song has been rendered by Anmoll, it looks like a spoofy version of jazzz numbers. The picturisation of this song may be one of the high points of the film.
Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar
Romantic songs in our films are done to death and until and unless the song has something novel, it often falls flat and that is the problem with Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar, sung by Dev Negi of Coffee Peete Peete fame from Gabbar Is Back. The song is neither soothing to ears nor it manages to evoke emotions in a listener.
O Saathi Mere
Sonu Nigam’s heartfelt rendition also fails to strike a chord as this semi classical number has nothing new to offer. Of course, it is refreshing to hear Sonu’s Carnatic prowess, but one needs something more to just Sonu Nigam’s earnest effort to make the song work. Overall, it is worth a listen but certainly not the best of the album.
Verdict: Krsna Solo along with lyricist Raj Shekhar and guest composers Tanishk & Vayu have come up with a fun, upbeat album which focuses more on the rustic, desi side of music, but also has mix of techno beats, jazz and melancholy to keep the music lovers entertained.
